This past Saturday I had the pleasure of sitting down with a good friend of mine, former governor Mike Huckabee, to discuss the current status of the Democrats’ health care bill as well as what we could be doing to help bring jobs to Americans.  Click here to watch the clip.

This Veterans Day

I hope that everyone takes a moment this Veterans’ Day to ponder how lucky we are to live in this great land and to thank—in person or in prayer—those who have kept it so.  Nothing can be more important than reminding us that we are what we are because we are free.  It was not by accident that this nation, based on the principles of freedom and liberty, became the most prosperous and most generous nation in recorded history.  We can learn about these principles from the thousands of veterans among us today.

To all of our heroes residing in the Seventh District: I would like to extend my sincere gratitude and praise for your service, your sacrifice, and your patriotism.  Thank you to all who have served in our nation’s armed services, you help comprise the pillars upon which our nation rests; upon which our nation gains its strength.

As I indicated in my statement on Saturday’s PelosiCare vote, I am disappointed in my colleagues who chose their agenda over the best interests of the American people they serve.  However, I am not disheartened and will continue to fight for common sense policy for this country.  Click here to watch the speech I gave on the House Floor Saturday night before the final vote.

I would like to thank all of you who participated in my telephone town hall meeting on Friday.  I very much appreciated all of your questions and support in the days before the health care vote.  If you were unable to participate on Friday or would simply like to listen to the event again, you may do so by clicking here.

President Obama calls today, “our moment to deliver.” If by “deliver” the President means cutting over $460 billion in Medicare benefits for our seniors, raising taxes on the middle class, and providing little to no tort reform, then yes: this is the chance for Democrats to “deliver” to the American people their worst fears packaged in a bill that is larger than four phone books.

There is a more appropriate way to “deliver” for the American people and that is to cast a vote against government-run health care and all of the evils that accompany it.  Congress needs to defeat Speaker Pelosi’s terrible bill once and for all so that we can all get back to creating solutions for this country.  Rest assured that whenever the vote for final passage on this bill happens—tonight, tomorrow, or the next day—I will be voting “no” and doing my part to “deliver” the American people from a terrifying future.

The Administration announced today that unemployment hit 10.2% for the month of October—this is the highest rate of unemployment since April, 1983.  These atrocious numbers come at a time when Speaker Pelosi has introduced a bill that would kill more jobs and tax more Americans into poverty.  Eight months ago, the Democrats promised that borrowing another trillion dollars would immediately “create” jobs and that our unemployment rate would not rise above 8%.  Why are we focusing on Speaker Pelosi’s plan for government-run health care when we should focused on creating jobs and providing tax relief for working families and small businesses?  I will continue to fight against the Pelosi Health Care Bill and fight to support a fiscally responsible plan that will help lower health care costs and reduce our raging deficit.

Fact of the Day:  The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) just confirmed that Speaker Pelosi’s Health Care Bill will insure 2.5 million more illegal immigrants than the Democrats’ old health care bill, H.R. 3200.  Alternatively, the Republican health care bill  specifically denies taxpayer-provided health coverage to anyone who is not an American citizen or a legal resident of the United States.

According to Section 501, page 297, of the Pelosi Health Care Bill, individuals who do not purchase “acceptable” health coverage, as defined by the government, will pay a tax generally equal to 2.5% of an individual’s adjusted gross income.  To put this in perspective, individuals with an income of $40,000 would be required to pay a $1,000 annual tax.  This doesn’t make health care more affordable for Americans; it simply penalizes those who choose a “non-government approved” path.

For the first time in our nation’s history, the Federal government will be forcing Americans to purchase a particular item in order to avoid being penalized by the government.  Never before have American citizens been taxed for not buying something.  This is the antithesis of freedom, liberty, and the principles of the U.S. Constitution.

I encourage you to read an alternative health care bill that will bring down costs without adding to our deficit and without harming senior citizens or the doctor-patient relationship.  Read a summary about common-sense health care reform by clicking here.

The Wall Street Journal calls the Pelosi Health Care legislation the “Worst Bill Ever.”  Throughout the course of this week, I hope to use this blog to highlight for you some of the countless things wrong with the Pelosi Health Care Bill.  Today, I’m going to provide you simply with a link to a list of 111 new Federal Bureaucracies created under this legislation.   Click here.  The list even provides you with the page number where the program is created in the bill.  I encourage you to check this blog regularly or visit my Health Care Alert page for the latest updates.

Congress can do so much better than the Pelosi bill, and the American people deserve so much better.  We must defeat the Pelosi bill and pass a viable solution like H.R. 3400 that will increase patients’ control—not government control—over health insurance.
