Lawrenceville, GA-Congressman John Linder (GA-07) has begun accepting applications from all eligible high school seniors currently residing in the Seventh Congressional District. The applicants will be considered for a nomination to any of following service academies: Military Academy at West Point, New York; Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland; Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York; and Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The Coast Guard Academy, the smallest of the five academies, does not require a Congressional nomination for admission.

“The service academies offer an exceptional and prestigious education and are an excellent opportunity for the best and brightest students of the Seventh Congressional District,” Linder said. “I encourage all students who have a sincere commitment and dedication to serve their country, to consider applying to an academy.”

Linder continued, “I say this every year, and again it bears repeating, the dedication of these young people is inspirational.  With the threat of terrorism and other great challenges, these talented young men and women compete for the opportunity to serve their country in such an essential role as a cadet in a service academy.”

Each applicant competing for a nomination from Representative Linder must meet the following requirements as of July 1 of the year of admission to a service academy:

• Be at least 17 years old, but not have passed his/her 23rd birthday;
• Be a U.S. citizen, residing in the Seventh Congressional District of Georgia;
• Be unmarried, not pregnant, and have no legal obligation to support children or other dependents; and
• Be men/women of good moral character who are trustworthy, emotionally stable, and motivated.

All students interested in being considered for a nomination should complete an application packet and file all required information with Representative Linder’s district office no later than 5:00 p.m., Friday, October 16, 2009. After the applications are reviewed, qualified candidates will be contacted for an interview by the Seventh District Academy Panel and interviewed the first week in November.
